Welcome to Coan Middle School's Orchestra website! At Coan middle school, students learn to play violin, viola, cello, guitar and double bass during the school day. The students participate in performances and field trips throughout the school year.
As of May 2014, Atlanta public schools made a decision to merge Coan middle school with Martin L. King Jr. Middle school. I have decided to leave this website running as a memorial to Coan middle school as being the first middle school to be established in the state of Georgia in the 1960's and also so that the orchestra students can stay connected. The merged school will be named Martin L. King Jr. Middle school and I will be posting additional pictures in the photo gallery from orchestra activities over the past two years. It was a pleasure and an honor to teach at a historic school and start the orchestra program there after it had been eliminated for almost twenty years. The orchestra students at Coan achieved many accomplishments over the past two years from participating in a grant, The Atlanta Music Project for group lessons and private music lesson scholarships to performing traditional American folk songs, jazz, blues, gospel, R & B and hip-hop music to earning an excellent overall rating at the Large group performance evaluation orchestra concert on level two, intermediate level music. Coan chamber orchestra students also participated in sight-reading for ratings and some went to the Georgia music educator's middle school honor orchestra clinic for two years and participated in the Encore! Summer music camp and the Camp Etude Summer music camps in the Atlanta area. Students, may you always play your instruments and allow your skills and enjoyment of music to take you to the next level in life and become life-long supporters of music! Look for more to come in the future.
